Remembering Sister Mary Alacoque McCann
Sister McCann served in diverse ministries during her many years as a Sister of Providence including admitting office clerk at the former Farren Memorial Hospital in Montague City, Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Providence Hospital in Holyoke and at the former St. Luke’s Hospital in Pittsfield. Later she was an apprentice in the former printing room at Providence Mother House in Holyoke. Among her other ministries were her care of children at the former Mount St. Vincent, Holyoke, and at Our Lady of Providence Children’s Center (Brightside) in West Springfield where she served as a cottage mother. Sister McCann also ministered in the dining rooms at Our Lady of Providence Children’s Center, St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mercy Hospital and at Providence Mother House. Sister McCann always wanted to be of service to others. Even in her later years, she volunteered as an assistant in the housekeeping department at Providence Mother House, as a nurse’s aide in the Infirmary, and assisted the SP President with various projects. She is survived by her Sisters in Community, several loving nieces, nephews, as well as several grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins. The Wake was held on Sunday, March 7. A Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, March 8, at 10 a.m. in the chapel at Providence Place.
