Land of Providence opens to public during farm and river day event
The Trustees of Reservations, who hold in trust Holyoke’s Land of Providence from the Sisters of Providence, opened the 26 acre, educational and recreational site to the public on Saturday, May 1. A parking area with access to the property is located off U.S. Route 5 North, directly across from Providence Hospital. The rich soil garden plots at the center of the Land of Providence acreage are bordered on the south by a Reflective Trail with planned guideposts of inspirational and informative material on the SP’s role in the land’s history and educational material on the plant, animal and bird species native to the property. The Trustees, with Nuestras Raíces and Holyoke Rows, their partners and neighbors, hosted a Farm and River Day to mark the occasion.
Highlights included: a “Dig In” with 80 volunteers readying the land for planting; a brief ceremony, set on the riverbank, with remarks by representatives of The Trustees, Nuestras Raíces and the Sisters of Providence; and, a ribbon-cutting at the new entrance.
