Proclaiming anniversary years

Sister Kathleen PopkoSisters of Providence and Associates gathered in the Kingston Dining Room at Providence Place on Sunday, December 11, to hear President Sister Kathleen Popko (pictured at right) issue A Proclamation declaring 2012 and 2013 as significant Anniversary Years in Congregational history.

The year 2012 marks 120 years since this Providence Community was founded as a Diocesan Congregation in the Diocese of Springfield, Massachusetts. 2013 looks back 140 years to 1873, the year the first Sisters of Providence arrived in Holyoke from Kingston, Ontario, Canada, to establish a mission to care for the area’s poor, aged, ill and infirm.

Sisters and Associates also enjoyed a private viewing of the acclaimed Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America video produced by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. In light of the Congregation’s own current celebration of its history, the choice of the video, highlighting many of the contributions made to the U.S. by Catholic Sisters, was a fitting one.

The day concluded over a lovely Christmas Dinner, prepared by the Providence Place Dietary Staff.
